Dallas Cowboys Proprietor Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Obscene Gesture toward Spectators
The NFL has imposed a hefty $250,000 penalty on Cowboys proprietor Jones for an action he describes as an “unintentional” obscene gesture directed at fans during a Sunday’s game at the Jets’ stadium.
Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones maintains he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“It was regrettable. That was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “There was a large group of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the signal was completely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I just showed the wrong digit,” he noted. “The action was inadvertently done. This is sincere. Should you call it unplanned, you can. But it got corrected pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Owner Fines
This incident isn’t the first time an NFL owner has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Recent examples include:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
- Former Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
Jones, who is recognized for his media savvy, reportedly has an approximate wealth of around $16bn, making the fine easily payable for the wealthy proprietor.

The incident follows a controversial offseason for Jones, who encountered significant criticism from the Cowboys fanbase after the team traded star defensive player Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.
